Quick answer
Pest control in Kermit is mostly about heat and water. Scorpions, roaches, crickets and ants push indoors in summer, and mice follow in fall. Your technician will inspect the home, find where pests get in, treat them and seal the gaps. Fixing drips and clearing clutter around the house makes the treatment last.
A Little About Kermit
Kermit is the seat of Winkler County, northwest of Odessa. About 6,300 people lived here in the 2020 census. The town is named for Kermit Roosevelt, the son of Theodore Roosevelt, who came to hunt pronghorn on a ranch nearby. Oil changed everything after the Hendrick field came in during 1926.
You can still see that history at Pioneer Park, where the last working wooden derrick in the Permian Basin was moved in 1966. Kids go to Kermit ISD, with an elementary, a junior high and Kermit High School all in town.
Kermit is classed as a hot arid climate, a step drier than the semi arid weather in Odessa. The ground is flat, which is why the town built crowned streets to move water during floods. When a summer storm hits, water still pools in low yards and ditches for a while.
Why Bugs Move In
Dry heat is hard on insects. They lose water fast and need shade to survive. That is why they move toward:
- Leaky faucets, AC drip lines and sprinkler heads
- Damp areas under sinks and around tubs
- Cool garages and storage rooms
- Shady spots under porches, sheds and wood piles
Fix leaks and move clutter away from the walls, and you take away much of what draws them in. Your technician can point out the spots that matter most at your home.
Pests Kermit Homes See Most
- Striped bark scorpions. They hide by day under rocks and boards, then walk in at night through weep holes and door gaps. See the scorpion guide and scorpion control.
- Roaches. American roaches crawl up out of sewer lines and storm drains. German roaches breed in kitchens. See roach control.
- Crickets. They pile up around lights in late summer and draw scorpions behind them.
- Fire ants. Mounds show up after rain. Read how to get rid of fire ants in the house.
- Mice. Cold fronts push them into garages and walls. See rodent control.
- Black widows. Sheds, meter boxes and garages hide them. Read about black widow spiders.
What Your Technician Will Do
- Inspect the home
Your technician will walk the outside first, then check the kitchen, baths, laundry and garage for signs of pests.
- Treat where pests live and walk
Outside walls, doorways and weep holes get treated for scorpions and crickets. Roaches get bait in the cracks where they hide. Ants get baits they carry home.
- Seal the openings
Door sweeps, weep hole screens and sealed pipe gaps make it harder for pests to return.
- Keep the barrier up
Hot weather keeps bugs active much of the year, so many homes choose routine general pest control.
Questions From Kermit Homeowners
Do you cover Kermit and the rest of Winkler County?
Yes. Requests are welcome from Kermit and nearby homes in Winkler County. Fill out the form with your address and the pest you are seeing. A local technician will reach out to set a time for your free inspection and talk through a quote.
Why do I see more roaches after a storm?
Heavy rain floods the drains and burrows where American roaches live. They come up looking for dry, safe places, and your house is close by. Keep drain covers tight, seal gaps around pipes and fix door sweeps to keep them from walking in.
Is a Kermit exterminator going to use strong sprays inside my house?
Not always. Many indoor problems are handled with baits placed in cracks, where kids and pets can't reach them. Sprays are often used outside along the walls. Ask your technician what they plan to use and how long to stay off treated areas.
How do I keep scorpions out of my kids' rooms?
Move beds so they don't touch the wall, and tuck sheets and blankets up so they don't drag on the floor. Shake out shoes and clothes left on the floor. Seal gaps around doors and windows. A treatment along the outside walls cuts down how many make it inside in the first place.
